mxl 770 vs shure sm58
an sm58 is more a live vocal mic for a PA. you can rent a decent condenser mic for $20-30 for a day or two. I put in probably 200 sessions on the 770, mixed a lot of vocals on the 990, and I am almost certain you should stick with the sm58. the sm57 is your swiss army mic. I don't know that I'd say the MXL will sound "better". My SM58 has some (a lot of rugged) stage and practice hours on it and I'm not sure it's at 100% right now (is there a way to test this??) If you have a lot of room dynamics, it is going to sound like crap. Some artists like it so much that they will choose it over a condenser during recording sessions. Also it could be a better mic for recording vocals, depending on your room. We always had 57s and 58s floating around back in the day and I remember one being global for recording and the other being for performance.
